The back story
About Buenos Aires by Subte, train and ferry
The Subte runs six lines under the centre and out to Palermo, Belgrano and Almagro, with the Premetro in the south-west. Suburban trains leave the great terminus of Retiro, among them the Mitre line to Tigre. And across the Río de la Plata, Buquebus and Colonia Express sail to Colonia del Sacramento and Montevideo in Uruguay.
The Subte
Lines A, B, C, D, E and H, and the Premetro, are run by Emova (emova.com.ar). Line A, under the Avenida de Mayo, is the oldest.
The trains
Trenes Argentinos runs the suburban lines from Retiro, Constitución and Once (argentina.gob.ar); the Mitre line runs from Retiro to Tigre for the delta.
Get a SUBE card, or check whether your contactless card works at the turnstile.
The ferries
Buquebus (buquebus.com) and Colonia Express (coloniaexpress.com) sail from the port terminals near Puerto Madero to Colonia del Sacramento, and Buquebus to Montevideo. Take your passport: Uruguay is another country.
Our advice: the SUBE card pays for the Subte, buses and suburban trains; buy one at a Subte station or kiosk and top it up as you go.
