The back story

Montevideo: Uruguay’s capital by ferry

In depth·Montevideo

A ferry across the Río de la Plata to Montevideo: the Ciudad Vieja, the Teatro Solís, the Palacio Salvo and the rambla along the river.

Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay, lies across the Río de la Plata from Buenos Aires. Its Ciudad Vieja, the old city on a peninsula, holds the Teatro Solís and the Plaza Independencia with the Palacio Salvo; the rambla, the riverside promenade, runs for miles along the shore.
